Father David Stevenson, rector of St Botolph’s Church in Boston, which hosts the local food bank, reports that the demand for food assistance has remained “persistently high.” He has called for support to address the growing need, particularly as rising heating costs contribute to financial strain for many families.
Boston Food Bank is affiliated with The Trussell Trust, an organization that operates a network of food banks across the UK. The local food bank has recorded significant increases in demand over the past year, with Stevenson noting that people are struggling to afford both food and heating expenses. This situation is echoed in various communities throughout the country.
The food bank has observed fluctuations in usage throughout the year but acknowledges an overall increase in those requiring assistance in 2025. As of last week, the food bank served its 3,000th individual this year, which included nearly 1,000 children identified as living in poverty.
To bolster its resources, the food bank has launched a harvest appeal, requesting donations of non-perishable items and easily prepared food, such as dry pasta, rice, and canned meals.
One user of the food bank, Alina, received assistance last year through a referral from Centrepoint Outreach. New to the area, she utilized the food bank while establishing her financial and living situation. Alina now volunteers at the food bank weekly, expressing her desire to help others avoid the anxiety she experienced during her time of need.
