This year, a Bedford-based charity, The Harpur Trust, has increased the financial support available to local university students due to the rising cost of living. The charity’s University Bursary Scheme now awards £4,500 to 16 students, marking a £1,000 increase from previous years.
Eshe Powell, a former recipient studying at the University of the West of England, noted that the bursary allowed her to take advantage of opportunities that might otherwise have been unattainable. The scheme, initiated approximately 20 years ago, has provided about £1 million in total aid to around 300 students.
In England and Wales, the annual cost of an undergraduate degree has risen by 3%, from £9,250 to £9,535, and both student rents and living costs have similarly increased. According to the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi), first-year students in the 2023-24 academic year face average weekly costs of £260 without rent, escalating to £418 with rent included. Students experiencing financial challenges can seek hardship funding, as well as assistance from organizations like The Harpur Trust.
Russell Terrey, who studied plant science at the University of Manchester, also benefitted from the scheme, emphasizing that the financial support alleviated stress and enabled him to dedicate his time to studies instead of a part-time job.
The scheme will reopen in January for current Year 13 students in the Bedford area. Eligible applicants include those attending several local educational institutions. The awarded funds can be utilized for various educational expenses, including accommodation, books, food, and transport.
Victoria Reed, the charity’s grant manager, stated that bursaries help students focus on their studies and may contribute to improved mental health by reducing financial anxiety and stress.
