RPM Raceway has launched a new karting experience called Kart Klash, which aims to replicate the fun of the popular video game series Mario Kart in a real-world setting. This initiative has begun at three locations in the northeastern United States: Stamford, CT; Long Island, NY; and Syracuse, NY. Kart Klash allows participants to control electric Sodikart RSX2 karts, which can reach speeds of up to 45 mph.
The design of Kart Klash incorporates familiar elements from Mario Kart, such as power-ups that can be collected during races. Unique to this experience is the competition format, focusing on completing eight laps without being hindered by racing counters that prioritize lap times. Participants start in a standing position, and power-ups are designed to enhance gameplay, echoing popular video game mechanics. Examples include speed boosts and tracking missiles.
However, the execution of these features differs in practice. Unlike typical Mario Kart tracks, RPM’s courses are narrower and shorter, affecting the way power-ups function. This raises questions about translating video game strategies into real-life racing, particularly the effectiveness of certain power-ups in close-quarters racing.
Challenges include the mechanics of weapon use and their visual representation; participants don’t see power-ups in physical form during races, although spectator viewing offers an animated overlay. Feedback from participants is actively sought by RPM Raceway to refine the experience.
Kart Klash pricing starts at $30 for members and $40 for non-members, reflective of the premium nature of this attraction. While commentators speculate on whether it can fully match the immersive joy of Mario Kart, the thrill of real-world racing could provide a unique appeal.
