Baby among two killed in Russian drone attack on Kyiv, officials say

A recent drone attack by Russian forces on Kyiv has reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, including a one-year-old child, and has injured 11 others, according to local officials. The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that the child’s body was recovered from the debris, and a young woman is also believed to be among the deceased.

In addition to Kyiv, military strikes targeted Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown, impacting three infrastructure facilities. Air raid warnings were activated across all regions of Ukraine during the night. The attack has caused significant damage, with several multi-storey residential buildings partially destroyed and on fire following direct hits.

Tkachenko emphasized the threat to civilians, urging residents to seek shelter. Reports indicate that residential areas in both the Svyatoshynkyi and Darnytskyi districts were affected, with multiple explosions occurring in Kyiv, including one in the city center. Multiple cruise missiles were also aimed at the capital. As of now, Russia’s military has not publicly commented on these drone strikes.

The assault follows a series of strong warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin directed at the West concerning military aid to Ukraine. Earlier in the week, Putin dismissed proposals from Western nations for a “reassurance force” to assist Ukraine post-ceasefire, amid discussions for security guarantees. French President Emmanuel Macron noted that 26 allied countries have agreed to send troops to support security measures once hostilities cease, although specifics have not been provided.

Since launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia currently occupies approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.
