Australian servicewomen launch landmark sex abuse case against military

Four servicewomen have initiated a class-action lawsuit against the Australian Defence Force (ADF), alleging sexual abuse, harassment, and discrimination. This case, filed in the Federal Court, could see thousands of women who have served between November 12, 2003, and May 25, 2025, joining the action. The lawsuit, represented by the law firm JGA Saddler, includes serious claims from the lead applicants, whose names remain confidential for legal reasons. Allegations include being forcibly restrained and groped and waking up without clothing after a social gathering with male officers.

The ADF has acknowledged the lawsuit and is reportedly developing a strategy to prevent sexual misconduct, stating that there is “no place for sexual violence” in the military.

One of the plaintiffs, an air force member, described being subjected to derogatory remarks, unsolicited pornographic content, and a claim made by a superior suggesting women should not receive equal pay to men due to perceived physical limitations. Another plaintiff from the navy recounted experiences of lewd comments and unwanted physical contact during her training and while stationed abroad.

A major report on veteran suicides revealed that approximately 800 sexual assault reports were made within the ADF between 2019 and 2024. This same report estimated that the actual number of incidents was much higher due to an approximate 60% under-reporting rate of sexual assaults and other forms of sexual misconduct.

An ADF spokesperson indicated the necessity for improvement and stated that all defense personnel deserve respect and a positive workplace environment. This lawsuit raises questions about the prevalent issues of harassment and misconduct within the military, highlighting ongoing challenges faced by women in the ADF.
