At least four dead as overnight strikes hit residential buildings

Russia and Ukraine engaged in overnight drone strikes, resulting in at least five fatalities. Officials in Kyiv reported that a significant Russian drone attack in the city resulted in two deaths and six injuries. The strikes damaged at least two residential buildings, leading to fires and disrupting essential services like electricity and water.

In response, Russian officials indicated that a Ukrainian strike in the Rostov region had killed three people, with initial reports citing one death. The acting governor of Rostov, Yuri Sliusar, shared on Telegram that two additional individuals succumbed to their injuries in the hospital following the attacks. Casualties were noted particularly in the city of Taganrog, where the local mayor promised appropriate responses.

Kyiv’s military administration chief, Tymur Tkachenko, reported a fire at a high-rise residential building in the Dniprovskyi district, necessitating the evacuation of its inhabitants. Emergency services rescued 18 individuals, including three children, as the search for potential victims continued after the fire was brought under control. Another apartment building in the Pechersk district also caught fire due to the strikes, but the flames were extinguished, according to Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.

Additionally, Ukraine’s air defense units were active during the attacks as explosions were reported throughout Kyiv, prompting authorities to advise residents to seek shelter in underground locations. The Ministry of Energy noted a concurrent assault on the country’s energy infrastructure, stating that assessments and restoration efforts would commence once security conditions allowed.

As strikes unfolded, discussions regarding a revised U.S. peace proposal were ongoing. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism about new amendments made by Ukraine’s European allies, while a Kremlin spokesperson dismissed these changes as unconstructive. White House officials also conveyed a hopeful stance regarding the potential for resolving the conflict.
