A freight train collided with a double-decker bus in central Mexico, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people and leaving more than 40 others injured, according to local authorities. The accident occurred as the bus, operated by Herradura de Plata, was entering an industrial area south of Atlacomulco, near Mexico City.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the bus being struck by the train while attempting to cross the railway tracks on Monday morning. In response to the incident, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the operator of the train, extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged drivers to adhere to railroad stop signs to prevent such tragedies.
Both the bus company and the train operator are collaborating with investigators as they analyze the circumstances surrounding the crash. Many of the injured have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Images from the accident scene depict significant damage to the bus, including a missing roof section, a shattered front windscreen, and substantial rear damage.
The State of Mexico’s attorney general’s office reported that the fatalities included seven women and three men, with some of the injured in critical condition. This incident is the latest in a series of fatal bus crashes in Mexico this year. In May, a separate crash involving a bus, a tanker truck, and a van resulted in at least 21 deaths in central Mexico. Additionally, in February, an accident in southern Mexico led to the deaths of at least 41 people, according to state officials.
