Google has commenced the rollout of its Ask Gemini AI assistant in Google Meet. Initially, this feature will only be accessible to selected Google Workspace customers. The AI assistant is designed to respond to participant inquiries by referencing captions generated during the call, as well as relevant documents and public websites that the participants have permission to view. It can also summarize statements made by specific participants, identify key decisions and action items, and provide a recap for those who join a meeting late, contingent on the activation of Google Meet’s Take Notes for Me feature by the host.
Responses generated by Ask Gemini remain confidential among participants, and neither these responses nor meeting data, like captions, are retained once a call ends. All participants will be informed when Ask Gemini is activated during a meeting, and while it is enabled by default, hosts possess the authority to disable it as necessary. Administrators can also set the default to turn the feature off at the start of meetings.
Currently, Ask Gemini is only available on desktop and is limited to meetings conducted in English, although plans for support in additional languages are underway. The rollout to customers is prioritizing those on Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Enterprise (Standard), Business Plus, and Business Standard, with a broader release anticipated in the first quarter of 2026 for additional Workspace customer tiers after gathering user feedback for enhancements.
Google advises users to review the AI’s outputs, as the technology may produce errors, particularly concerning people. For those catching up on parts of a meeting, it may be beneficial to review the relevant segments personally after the meeting concludes.
