Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro can be easily scratched

The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max have been noted for their vulnerability to scratches and scuffs, particularly around the edges of the camera bump. In a durability test conducted by tech blogger Zack Nelson on his JerryRigEverything YouTube channel, he highlights that the anodized aluminum layer on these models does not adhere well to the corners, potentially creating weak spots in the coating. This particular issue stems from the electrochemical anodizing process, suggesting it was a design choice made by Apple.

Nelson points out that Apple opted against incorporating features such as a chamfer or radius around the camera area, which could have improved durability. He speculated that this design choice aimed to enhance the overall aesthetics of the phone. The durability test also indicated that everyday items, like coins or keys, can cause chipping of the anodized coating around the sharp corners of the camera bump. Conversely, similar scratching on the flatter surface of the camera plateau did not damage the coating but left behind only dust, which could be easily wiped away.

For consumers considering a new iPhone, this information may prompt the decision to use a protective case. Alternatively, some users might choose to accept the gradual wear as it is primarily a cosmetic issue, rather than a functional one.
