Apple has introduced a new program aimed at mini app developers, which significantly reduces the fees associated with in-app purchases. Announced on Thursday, the initiative allows mini app creators enrolled in the program to benefit from a lowered commission rate of 15%. This rate is half of the standard up to 30% fee that Apple typically charges other developers.
Mini apps are characterized as “self-contained experiences” created using HTML5 and JavaScript, functioning within larger applications. This format has gained popularity in regions such as China, where platforms like WeChat feature built-in services for various functions, including ride-hailing and food delivery. Other applications, such as Telegram, Discord, Snapchat, and TikTok, have also begun incorporating mini apps into their ecosystems.
This announcement follows Apple’s recent agreement with Tencent, which allows the company to take a 15% commission on purchases made through WeChat’s mini apps. This agreement appears to be in response to ongoing scrutiny from the Department of Justice, which has accused Apple of limiting the growth of super apps—platforms that integrate multiple services or mini apps within a single application. By launching this program, Apple may be attempting to alleviate some of the antitrust concerns surrounding its business practices.
Apple asserts that the new initiative aims to support developers in growing their businesses while enhancing the presence of mini apps within the App Store. The implications of this program for both developers and consumers in the app marketplace remains to be seen.
