Amazon offers AI translation for self-published Kindle books

Amazon has introduced Kindle Translate, a new AI translation tool designed to assist self-published authors in releasing their ebooks in multiple languages. Launched in beta on Thursday for a limited number of Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) authors, the tool currently offers translation between English and Spanish, as well as from German to English, without any additional costs to authors.

Authors participating in the program can choose the languages for their translations, set individual list prices, and preview the translations before they are published. Amazon states that all translations will undergo an automatic evaluation for accuracy before publication, and ebooks created with this tool will feature a “Kindle Translate” label.

Amazon notes that currently, less than 5% of titles on its platform are available in multiple languages, a statistic that Kindle Translate aims to enhance. Additionally, ebooks translated through this tool will qualify for KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited, potentially broadening their reach. This launch follows the introduction of a multi-lingual AI narration tool by Amazon’s audiobook platform, Audible, several months prior.
