Amazon is bringing back Rick Moranis for the Spaceballs sequel

Amazon MGM Studios is developing a sequel to the film Spaceballs, with a new cast photo indicating that Rick Moranis will return to reprise his role as Dark Helmet. This marks Moranis’ first return to live-action films since his last appearance in Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, released in 1997. Earlier reports from Deadline confirmed Moranis’ involvement, and this announcement solidifies his participation.

In addition to Moranis, the original cast members Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and George Wyner are set to return. They will be joined by new actors Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan. Specific details regarding the film’s plot remain undisclosed, but Amazon has characterized it in a playful manner, referring to it as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

The sequel is expected to be released in theaters in 2027, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original film. The announcement was made earlier this year through a promotional video that featured a parody of the iconic Star Wars title crawl, addressing the numerous sequels and spinoffs that have become common in major entertainment franchises. The recent cast photo’s black-and-white aesthetic is also thought to pay homage to Star Wars.
