Amazon is developing a new pair of augmented-reality (AR) glasses, known internally as Jayhawk, as reported by The Information. This initiative places Amazon alongside companies like Meta, Google, Samsung, and Snap in the AR market. The glasses are expected to feature a full-color display in one eye, as well as integrated microphones, speakers, and a camera.
In 2023, Amazon released its third-generation Echo Frame smart glasses, but their performance has not matched that of competitors such as Meta’s Ray-Bans. The anticipated launch of the AR glasses is projected for late 2026 or early 2027. However, there is a possibility that Amazon may release an earlier version specifically designed for delivery drivers.
Plans reportedly include producing 100,000 units of these driver-specific glasses, which are referred to as “Amelia” internally. These versions are expected to have a bulkier design compared to the consumer edition and will feature a display intended to assist drivers with delivery instructions. According to a previous report by Reuters, the glasses will provide drivers with turn-by-turn navigation displayed on a small embedded screen.
As companies increasingly explore AR technology, Amazon’s entry into this market raises questions regarding the differentiation of its products and their potential applications.
