Air India plane crash survivor: ‘I’m luckiest man alive’

Viswashkumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of a recent Air India plane crash that claimed 241 lives, has expressed feelings of both fortune and deep distress following the tragedy. Ramesh, who was on a London-bound flight that crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, lost his younger brother Ajay in the incident. He described escaping the wreckage as a “miracle” but acknowledged the toll it has taken on him mentally and physically.

Since returning to his home in Leicester, Ramesh has reportedly been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and has found it difficult to communicate with his wife and four-year-old son. He emphasized the impact of the incident on his family, saying he feels isolated and emotionally distressed. His mother has also been affected, remaining uncommunicative for months.

The crash, which involved flames engulfing the Boeing 787, resulted in 169 Indian nationals and 52 Britons among the fatalities, with an additional 19 individuals killed on the ground. A preliminary report from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau noted a disruption in fuel supply to the engines shortly after take-off. An investigation is ongoing, while Air India has stated that support for Ramesh and the families affected by the crash is a priority.

Ramesh, who has not received any medical treatment for his mental health since returning home, faces ongoing physical challenges from injuries sustained in the crash, which prevent him from working or driving. He has received an interim compensation payment from Air India, which his advisers argue is insufficient to meet his needs. They are advocating for a meeting with airline executives to discuss his situation comprehensively. The airline has indicated it is open to communication and has expressed condolences to affected families.
