Sinclair Broadcasting and Nexstar Media Group, which collectively represent approximately 25% of ABC’s national audience, will resume airing Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show on their ABC affiliate stations. This decision comes after both companies had temporarily suspended the show under pressure from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, following Kimmel’s reinstatement by Disney earlier this week. Initially, after Kimmel’s joke about the alleged shooter of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, Sinclair and Nexstar opted to replace Jimmy Kimmel Live! with other programming, despite his reinstatement.
In a statement, Sinclair minimized the impact of FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s threats regarding the airing of Kimmel’s show. Carr’s warnings to broadcasters followed Kimmel’s controversial remarks and were issued prior to the show’s removal from Sinclair and Nexstar stations, as well as Kimmel’s suspension by ABC. Sinclair asserted, “Our decision to preempt this program was independent of any government interaction or influence,” emphasizing the value of free speech in broadcasting and the importance of allowing local stations to make independent programming decisions.
Sinclair also indicated it has engaged in discussions with ABC about potential measures to enhance accountability and viewer engagement, including the appointment of an independent ombudsman. While these proposals have yet to be adopted by ABC and Disney, Sinclair believes they could foster greater trust and accountability.
Similarly, Nexstar also downplayed Carr’s influence, stating that its decisions were guided by its principles and remained independent of external pressures. The company noted ongoing discussions with Disney executives, appreciating their constructive approach. Disney SVP of strategic communications Richard Horrmann declined to provide comments on the matter.
Update, September 26th: Nexstar will also resume airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! starting tonight.
