China’s National Development and Reform Commission has issued a warning regarding the potential for a bubble in the humanoid robotics sector. This advisory comes as concerns rise about a similar bubble in the artificial intelligence industry, which could impact investment in related technologies.
At a press briefing, spokesperson Li Chao emphasized the need for the humanoid robotics industry to find a balance between rapid growth and the associated risks of market instability. Li remarked that while there has been significant investment in humanoid robotics, the industry currently lacks many proven applications, raising concerns about the proliferation of similar models if research and development funding declines.
According to Li, there are over 150 companies operating in China’s humanoid robotics space, with more than half classified as startups or businesses transitioning from other sectors. This rapid influx of companies highlights the growing interest and financial backing in this field.
The commission’s caution marks a notable shift in tone from the Chinese government, which has previously identified humanoid robotics and related technologies as crucial for future economic advancement. Earlier this year, the technology underpinning humanoid robots was designated as a national priority, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering innovation in this area.
