A six-storey building in Madrid, which was undergoing refurbishment, partially collapsed, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. The incident occurred on Hileras Street, and Madrid’s mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, confirmed that the bodies of the last two missing persons were recovered on Wednesday morning, approximately 15 hours after the collapse.
Local reports identify the victims as a 30-year-old Spanish woman, who was overseeing the project, and three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, ranging in age from 30 to 50. Additionally, three other individuals sustained injuries during the incident. The former office building was in the process of being converted into a hotel, and an investigation by authorities has been initiated.
Spanish emergency services responded promptly, deploying several teams equipped with drones and sniffer dogs to search for individuals who might still be trapped. Two bodies were recovered on the night of the collapse.
In a statement on social media, Mayor Martinez-Almeida extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims. Eyewitness accounts indicate that a construction worker present during the incident was pumping concrete into the lower floors and fled upon witnessing the resulting dust cloud from the collapse. Despite the internal structure giving way, the façade of the building remained intact.
According to information available on the developer Rehbilita’s website, the building was undergoing extensive renovations aimed at transforming it into a four-star hotel.
