One in three UK workers have called in sick after work drinks, survey finds | Alcohol

A recent report by the IPPR think tank highlights that one in three UK workers have called in sick after drinking at work-related events or with colleagues. The research indicates that many employees feel pressured to consume alcohol in such settings despite a notable decline in alcohol consumption among younger generations. The report suggests that employers have not fully adapted to this shift in attitudes, as many still organize social events centered around alcohol.

The findings are based on a survey conducted by Public First, which included 2,083 working-age adults in the UK. Specific data reveals that 32% of workers admitted to calling in sick the day after drinking at work, with higher rates of reported hangovers among younger workers: 41% of those aged 18 to 24 and 47% of those aged 25 to 34 experienced this issue. In particular sectors like education and health and social care, 22% and 24% of employees, respectively, reported taking time off due to drinking, with similar percentages arriving late to work.

The report posits that existing workplace cultures, which often prioritize drinking, can adversely affect productivity and overall employee wellbeing. Some organizations, like the restaurant chain Wagamama, have shifted to non-alcoholic team-building activities. The IPPR recommends that the government implement minimum unit pricing for alcohol and encourage employers to adopt clearer policies regarding workplace drinking.

The Confederation of British Industry emphasizes the importance of ensuring that employees do not feel forced to drink at work events. Additionally, the government has acknowledged ongoing reviews to address alcohol-related issues, including a commitment to improve health services related to substance use. However, a spokesperson refrained from commenting directly on the IPPR report.
