A 30-year-old woman has become the third confirmed fatality from methanol poisoning in São Paulo, Brazil, prompting an investigation into the source of contaminated alcoholic beverages. The woman, Bruna Araújo de Souza, reportedly consumed a vodka drink at a bar over a week ago before passing away. This case follows the deaths of two men, identified by local media as Marcos Antônio Jorge Júnior and Ricardo Lopes Mira.
As of the latest update from Brazil’s health ministry, there have been 225 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning, predominantly in São Paulo. Authorities have responded by closing at least 11 establishments and seizing more than 10,000 bottles of alcohol.
The precise cause of the contamination, whether intentional or accidental, remains under investigation. Health officials have advised the public to avoid consuming alcohol that lacks proper labeling, safety seals, or tax stamps. Methanol, a toxic form of alcohol found in products like antifreeze and cleaning supplies, can lead to serious health symptoms that are often mistaken for a hangover.
Ms. Souza was hospitalized in critical condition, where tests confirmed the presence of methanol in her system; she was later declared brain dead. The two deceased men also reportedly fell ill after consuming vodka in bars. Health officials at both state and national levels are investigating additional suspected cases of methanol poisoning.
The manager of a bar near the busy Paulista Avenue mentioned that patrons are concerned and are being advised to refrain from drinking cocktails. Additionally, Brazilian rapper Hungria has shared his experience of hospitalization due to suspected methanol poisoning, urging others to find safe drinking options. Brazil’s Health Minister Alexandre Padilha remarked on the unusual nature of the situation concerning methanol poisoning in the country.
