OpenAI’s Sora is reportedly working on collaborations featuring fictional characters. Bill Peebles, head of the Sora team, indicated that multimedia cameos of copyrighted characters are planned for the platform, with further details expected soon. This development aims to address ongoing challenges related to unauthorized content, such as depictions of characters in inappropriate or illegal scenarios that have previously emerged from the platform.
Recent shifts in policy by CEO Sam Altman also reflect an effort to improve content generation practices. OpenAI previously employed an opt-out copyright policy for creating videos but is moving towards an opt-in model. Altman stated that this change will grant rights holders greater control, particularly in terms of how their intellectual property is presented, potentially allowing for more interaction in fan-generated content.
In addition to these changes, Altman mentioned that some form of revenue sharing will be introduced for rightsholders whose characters are incorporated into content on Sora. However, he acknowledged that determining an effective payment model may require adjustments and experimentation over time. This indicates a significant shift in how OpenAI intends to navigate copyright and collaborations in digital content creation.
