Rescuers have successfully assisted more than 350 individuals who were stranded due to severe weather conditions on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest. This situation arose when an unexpected heavy snowfall and rain impacted over 500 trekkers in the Tingri region, a common route to the summit of the mountain. As reports indicate, those successfully rescued were taken to Qudang township, which is situated on the Tibetan side of Everest.
Currently, approximately 200 trekkers remain stranded in difficult conditions, but they are expected to reach Qudang in stages with the help of rescuers organized by local authorities. The reports did not clarify the status of local guides and support staff with the trekking groups, nor did they address whether other trekking parties near the north face of Everest were affected.
The severe weather began late Friday and continued through Saturday, with snowfall occurring at elevations averaging 4,200 meters (approximately 13,800 feet). In response to the hazardous conditions, ticket sales and access to the Everest Scenic Area were halted from late Saturday, as indicated in announcements from the local Tingri County Tourism Company.
One rescuer, Chen Geshuang, described the situation as perilous, reporting wet and cold conditions that posed risks of hypothermia. He noted that such weather circumstances were unusual for October, stating that the dramatic weather patterns occurred abruptly.
In a related context, Nepal’s Tourism Board reported ongoing search and rescue efforts, particularly after substantial rains led to landslides and flash floods in Nepal, resulting in at least 47 fatalities. This weather disruption has compounded challenges in the region, including significant flooding in neighboring countries, affecting millions.
