In terms of fighting, a Russian attack in the village of Lapaivka, located in Ukraine’s Lviv region, reportedly killed four individuals, including a 15-year-old girl. This assault also injured several others and targeted gas infrastructure critical for heating amidst cold weather, according to local authorities. In the Zaporizhia region, Russian forces launched 702 attacks across 18 different settlements in a single day, resulting in one fatality and ten injuries. The attacks caused widespread power outages, leaving approximately 73,000 residents without electricity, although most had service restored by early afternoon. Russian officials claimed that their military operations aimed at Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the Russian military initiated over 50 missile strikes and deployed around 500 attack drones across various Ukrainian regions. Conversely, retaliatory Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s Belgorod region resulted in power outages affecting about 40,000 residents, along with three reported injuries from the attacks.
In the context of politics and diplomacy, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to voluntarily limit strategic nuclear weapons, expressing that it sounds like a beneficial idea. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius cautioned Europe against falling into what he termed “Putin’s escalation trap,” referencing increased drone activity across the continent. Additionally, Georgia’s Prime Minister raised concerns regarding foreign influence in internal unrest in Moldova. Diplomatic dialogues also included discussions between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about utilizing frozen Russian assets for the support of Ukrainian forces. Reports indicated that U.S. diplomats plan to present evidence suggesting Cuba’s involvement in sending fighters to support Russia in Ukraine.
Regarding weapons, Putin warned that the supply of Tomahawk missiles from the U.S. to Ukraine could severely damage bilateral relations. Zelenskyy noted that Russian military operations are supported by components from various international manufacturers.
