A search conducted by a volunteer team utilizing cadaver detection dogs has led to the identification of an “area of interest” in the case of Cheryl Grimmer, a British child who disappeared at the age of three in January 1970 from Fairy Meadow beach in Wollongong, Australia. The search team reported its findings to New South Wales Police, who are now involved in further investigations.
Authorities believe that Cheryl Grimmer was abducted shortly after her family emigrated from Bristol. Police have announced plans for a more detailed search of the area, citing ongoing inquiries. A notable aspect of the case involves a confession made by a teenage boy a year after Cheryl vanished; however, this admission was ultimately not accepted in court. A trial in 2019 concerning a suspect, identified only by the codename “Mercury,” was inconclusive, with the man denying any wrongdoing.
Cheryl’s brother, Ricki Nash, last saw her near the changing rooms at the beach. He expressed frustration over the length of time taken to conduct this search, questioning why such investigations were not undertaken decades earlier. “This should have been done 55 years ago,” he stated.
