Japan is currently experiencing a shortage of Asahi products, including beer and bottled tea, due to a cyber-attack that has disrupted the company’s operations. According to Asahi Group, most of its factories in Japan have halted production since Monday following the attack on its ordering and delivery system.
Major retailers in Japan, such as FamilyMart and Lawson, have alerted customers to potential shortages of Asahi products. FamilyMart announced that Asahi has temporarily suspended orders and shipments, with no immediate timeline for resumption of services. The chain indicated that its Famimaru brand of bottled teas, which are produced by Asahi, might be particularly affected.
In response to the situation, FamilyMart issued an apology to its customers, stating it is collaborating with Asahi to address the supply issues. Similarly, Lawson has reported expected shortages of Asahi products and plans to offer alternative items to mitigate customer impact. The supermarket chain Life Cooperation also indicated that Asahi goods may soon be out of stock.
Asahi is the largest brewer in Japan and has a significant presence globally, owning brands such as Fullers in the UK and Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, and Grolsch. The Japanese market comprises about half of Asahi’s total sales, with the company well known for its Super Dry beer and various non-alcoholic beverages.
The company has communicated that the system failure is confined to its domestic operations and has assured customers that there has been no confirmed leakage of personal data. Asahi has stated that it is investigating the cause of the disruption and is actively working to restore normal operations, although it has not provided a specific timeline for recovery.
