Sean “Diddy” Combs, a convicted rap mogul, has submitted a letter to the judge presiding over his criminal trial, requesting leniency during his upcoming sentencing, which is scheduled for Friday. In the four-page letter, Combs attributes his past actions to drug addiction and expresses remorse for the pain he has caused, stating he has reformed following a 13-month period in a Brooklyn jail.
Combs was found guilty in July on two counts related to prostitution and now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years. While prosecutors are advocating for a minimum sentence of 11 years, Combs’ legal team is seeking his release later this month. In his letter to Judge Arun Subramanian, Combs specifically apologizes for the assault against his ex-girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, indicating that his behavior was influenced by substance abuse and personal struggles.
Accusers of Combs have also addressed the judge, expressing concerns about his potential for retaliation if released. Ventura articulated fears for her safety and asserted that Combs should receive a substantial sentence, asserting he is unlikely to change. In contrast, Combs describes his time in jail as transformative, claiming to have emerged as a sober individual dedicated to teaching others about success in business.
Furthermore, Combs appeals to the judge’s compassion, mentioning his seven children and elderly mother, who recently underwent brain surgery. He requests that the court recognize his potential for change, suggesting that he could serve as an example of rehabilitation. Combs is expected to address the court directly before the sentence is issued, alongside testimony from his defense team. Notably, he was acquitted of more severe charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking, which could have resulted in a life sentence. Prosecutors maintain he is “unrepentant” and argue for a significant prison term.
