Robert Mugabe Jr., the son of Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe, has been charged with drug possession after an incident in Harare. The 33-year-old was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly driving the wrong way down a one-way street. During a search by the police, two sachets of cannabis were reportedly found in a black sling bag he was wearing.
In connection with his arrest, police stated that five individuals associated with him were also apprehended. Mugabe Jr.’s lawyer plans to contest the charges, asserting that the drugs were taken from a vehicle with multiple occupants, differing from the police report, which indicated a recovery of 2 grams of cannabis with an estimated street value of $30. Mugabe Jr. was taken to court wearing casual attire and was not handcuffed.
The court has remanded him in custody pending a bail decision expected on Friday. Police also reported seizing 25 sachets of marijuana and six ecstasy pills from the alleged syndicate members.
This incident is not Mugabe Jr.’s first legal issue. Earlier in 2023, he faced allegations of damaging property and assaulting a police officer but was released after reaching an out-of-court settlement with the victim.
Robert Mugabe Sr. led Zimbabwe for 37 years before being ousted in 2017 and passed away in 2019. His presidency was marked by a struggle against colonial rule and later by accusations of election-related violence and economic mismanagement. Following his resignation, he was succeeded by Emmerson Mnangagwa, with whom family relations had been strained. However, Robert Mugabe Jr. appears to have reconciled with Mnangagwa, having attended a rally in 2022 where he was welcomed back into the ruling Zanu-PF party. Investigations into the current allegations continue.
