European Union leaders are set to convene in Copenhagen for a summit aimed at enhancing European defense capabilities in light of recent security challenges. These concerns have been magnified by Russian incursions into EU airspace and drone activity that specifically targeted Danish airports in the preceding week.
Countries situated on the EU’s eastern border, such as Poland and Estonia, have experienced the most acute threats. In response, ten EU member states have expressed support for a multi-layered “drone wall,” designed to effectively detect, track, and neutralize threats posed by drones. To enhance security for the summit, Denmark has implemented bans on civilian drone flights and imposed strict traffic regulations in Copenhagen.
Despite heightened security measures, normal activities in the city appear largely unaffected. Denmark is also hosting a broader European Political Community summit shortly after the EU meeting, with assistance from international allies aimed at ensuring the safety of both events. This includes contributions from ten partner nations offering anti-drone and surveillance support, alongside increased military presence from countries such as Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
While Danish authorities have not confirmed any direct links to Russian provocations, government officials have indicated that there are concerns about a “professional actor” behind the drone disruptions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has cited Russia as a primary security threat. Similarly, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has pointed to potential Russian involvement in the recent drone activity.
Key discussions at the summit will include the conceptualization of a “drone wall,” originally proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The implementation and financial considerations of such a system remain topics of debate among EU leaders. Furthermore, a senior EU diplomat has noted the need for improved agility and efficacy in European security measures, particularly in response to Russia’s recent drone activities.
Plans are also underway to develop a comprehensive roadmap for European defense, potentially including significant financial investments for enhancing military capabilities by 2030. The security situation in Ukraine and its aspirations for EU membership, alongside the geopolitical dynamics with Hungary, are expected to be further explored during the summit.
