Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has instructed a flotilla sailing towards Gaza to halt its mission, expressing concerns that the actions of activists attempting to deliver aid could undermine a new U.S. proposal aimed at resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), comprising over 40 boats and accompanied by an Italian naval frigate, is currently navigating towards Gaza. The Italian frigate is set to stop once the flotilla is 150 nautical miles from Gaza’s coastline.
As the flotilla approached this limit, GSF reported an increase in drone activity overhead, indicating a possible escalation of tensions in the area. Meloni noted that the U.S. proposal has generated “hope” for peace but warned that the flotilla’s efforts could serve as justification for military action. Israel has advised the flotilla to deliver its humanitarian supplies to an Israeli port instead.
The flotilla carries more than 500 individuals, including Italian politicians and climate activist Greta Thunberg. GSF recently indicated trepidation regarding the area ahead, citing previous encounters with attacks or interceptions of similar flotillas. The group also mentioned preparations for potential confrontations, explaining that they had been approached by unidentified vessels, which later left the area.
Italian officials have suggested that the flotilla consider depositing its aid in Cyprus to avoid conflict with Israel. Meloni articulated that any alternate decision could hinder peace efforts and exacerbate the current situation, particularly for the people in Gaza. However, GSF has affirmed its commitment to continue its mission, declaring that the Italian navy should not impede their objectives.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto previously condemned a purported drone strike on the flotilla, linking it to intensified tensions. Both Italy and Spain have assigned naval forces to the flotilla in response to reported disturbances. Israel has characterized the flotilla as a Hamas initiative but has not provided supporting evidence. Pope Leo XIV has also expressed concern for the safety of those involved, emphasizing the need for restraint.
The U.S. peace proposal seeks an immediate cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the exchange of detained individuals from Gaza.
