NRI couple apologises, leave India after kissing video at garba goes viral on social media

An Australian couple of Indian origin issued an apology on September 29 after a video of them kissing at a Garba event in Vadodara, Gujarat, gained widespread attention on social media. The incident occurred on September 26 during the United Way Garba at Kalali ground, which attracts approximately 30,000-35,000 attendees each night, including many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

The video, showing the couple dancing before the husband kissed his wife, sparked controversy. Some users labeled the act “obscene,” claiming it disrespected the cultural and religious values associated with the Navratri festival, while others defended their actions as a simple expression of affection.

Following the backlash, complaints were lodged against the couple at Atladra Police Station. The police located the couple, who then provided a written apology and acknowledged their error. After submitting the apology, they were released without legal repercussions. A police officer confirmed that the couple, Pratik Patel from Manjalpur and his wife from Anand, had been living in Australia, where they returned after the incident. They have been married for 16 years and have two children.
