Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui recently held discussions in Beijing, focusing on mutual cooperation and strategic alignment in international matters. This meeting occurred shortly after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to China for an event commemorating Japan’s defeat in World War II.
During their talks, both ministers emphasized the need to oppose “hegemonism” and “unilateralism,” terms that subtly reference ongoing tensions with the United States. Wang stated that China aims to enhance collaboration with North Korea in various international and regional issues, asserting a commitment to protect shared interests and promote fairness in global governance.
Choe echoed Wang’s sentiments, expressing North Korea’s support for China’s proposals, including the concept of a “community with a shared future for mankind” and the Global Governance Initiative. He highlighted North Korea’s willingness to cooperate closely with China to resist unilateral approaches and advocate for a more equitable world order.
Choe also conveyed North Korea’s well-wishes for the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party, asserting that the friendship between North Korea and China is unchanging. He noted that relations should evolve in response to contemporary circumstances, as indicated by a statement from Kim.
The meeting between Wang and Choe occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions between China and the U.S., which extend beyond geopolitics to include trade and technology sectors. Additionally, North Korea’s longstanding conflicts with the U.S. regarding its nuclear and missile development programs remain a critical issue.
Notably, this diplomatic engagement follows a joint appearance by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un, and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a recent military parade, an event interpreted by some as a display of unity against U.S. influence in international affairs.
