Three dead and several injured after shooting at US waterfront bar

Three individuals have died, and multiple others sustained injuries following a shooting incident at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina. The event took place on Saturday evening at the American Fish Company, located at the Southport Yacht Basin.

According to city spokesperson ChyAnn Ketchum, a boat approached the dock at approximately 9:30 PM local time before the shooter opened fire. The assailant subsequently fled by boat towards the Intracoastal Waterway. Law enforcement officials reported that a suspect matching the shooter’s description was apprehended about half an hour later by the U.S. Coast Guard in Oak Island, roughly 12 miles west of the incident location. The identity of the suspect has not yet been disclosed by police.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring characterized the event as a tragic occurrence for the close-knit community, which has a population of nearly 4,000 residents. Chief Coring noted that around six individuals were injured during the shooting and are currently receiving medical treatment. The names of the deceased victims have not been released by the authorities.

In response to the incident, officials from Southport issued a cautionary statement urging residents to remain indoors while investigations into the active shooter situation were underway. Chief Coring later expressed some reassurance about community safety, stating, “I’m comfortable to say that we don’t feel like there’s any additional threats to the community.”
