Drones have recently been sighted near military installations in Denmark, including the country’s largest, Karup airbase. This activity coincided with incidents earlier in the week that disrupted air traffic, prompting authorities to close civilian airspace temporarily. Similar drone reports have emerged from Germany, Norway, and Lithuania.
Danish officials characterized the drone incursions on Thursday as potentially indicative of a “hybrid attack,” though they noted there is no evidence linking Russia to these incidents. Duty officer Simon Skelsjaer indicated that the police had not identified the origin of the drones, as they were not shot down, and mentioned an ongoing investigation in collaboration with the Danish military.
The Defense Ministry confirmed sightings near various military installations, although specific locations were not disclosed. Approximately 3,500 personnel work at Karup airbase, which supports all Danish Armed Forces’ helicopters and other military functions.
The drone sightings follow a series of related disruptions at several Danish airports, including Aalborg and Billund, which were forced to close due to drone activity earlier this week. Copenhagen airport also experienced similar interruptions and was temporarily shut down after drone sightings, while Oslo airport in Norway was affected as well.
In Germany, authorities are investigating incidents involving drones in Schleswig-Holstein, which borders Denmark. Meanwhile, Norway is examining possible drone activity near Orland airbase, home to F-35 fighters. Lithuania reported delays at Vilnius airport due to drones.
There is speculation that these drone incursions might reflect a form of indirect aggression, potentially linked to Russia’s ongoing tensions with NATO states supporting Ukraine, but this connection remains unverified. The Russian embassy in Copenhagen has denied involvement and dismissed claims of staged provocations. In response to previous incidents, Danish officials and representatives have indicated that the actions may have been conducted by a “professional actor,” possibly acting locally.
