Raleigh One e-bike review: redemption tour

The 2023 bankruptcy of VanMoof has led to the launch of the new VanMoof S6 e-bike under new ownership, and a commuter e-bike called the Raleigh One, designed by VanMoof’s founders, Ties and Taco Carlier. The Raleigh One features anti-theft tools such as GPS tracking, an alarm system, and integrated lighting. It has a simplified design, including a single-speed, belt-driven transmission connected to a rear hub motor, which provides a max speed of 25 km/h (16 mph) and 35 Nm of torque.

Though suited for flat terrains, reviews indicate that the lack of a power boost feature impacts performance on hills. The Raleigh One is priced at £2,399 / €2,699 (approximately $3,000 USD), which is relatively consistent with the average price of e-bikes in Europe, although higher than some competitors.

The e-bike is delivered through local bike shops, and can also be shipped directly to consumers. The setup process at home reportedly takes about 30 minutes and includes clear instructions. The Raleigh One weighs 21 kg (46.3 lbs) and uses a Mivice motor along with 27.5 x 2.2-inch tires, presenting a sturdy ride. Its battery claim is up to 80 km in low assist mode; however, tests showed 47.7 km before depleting, impacted by environmental conditions and firmware updates.

Battery charging times are relatively quick, with 50% in about 55 minutes and full charge in approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. The connected app, while functional, has faced issues like battery drain when idle. A planned firmware update from Accell Group aims to address these software concerns.

Lastly, the Raleigh One operates subscription services for tracking and theft protection, raising questions about the necessity of such features. Regardless of the subscription model, the product’s utility may depend on user needs and preferences within urban commuting contexts.
