Japanese keyboard manufacturer Realforce is collaborating with the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise to launch four limited edition mechanical keyboards influenced by notable Gundam designs. The models will feature designs based on the Z Gundam and Hyaku Shiki from Zeta Gundam, as well as the Nu Gundam and Sazabi from Char’s Counterattack. According to information on Realforce’s Japanese website, reservations for these keyboards are expected to start in late December, although pricing details have yet to be released.
All four keyboards will be based on the Realforce GX1, which is a wired tenkeyless model typically priced around $250. Realforce keyboards utilize capacitive Topre switches, which are recognized for their distinctive typing experience and are also found in the popular Happy Hacking Keyboard.
Realforce notes that the keyboards will be available with both English layout and Japanese ISO options. This raises questions about their availability outside Japan, as fans may be anticipating their arrival in markets such as the United States.
While the keyboards feature distinctive designs, some observers have suggested that they may not be visually striking when compared to other themed keyboards. For instance, a recent Asus release, the ROG Strix Scope Gundam Edition, has been noted for its more elaborate design. Additionally, various Gundam-themed keycap sets are available that emphasize creative anime-inspired aesthetics.
The collaboration may also capture the interest of collectors who engage with Gundam models and related merchandise, indicating potential for cross-promotional sales between keyboard enthusiasts and Gundam fans.
