Notes found in the residence of Joshua Jahn, the suspected shooter in a recent attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, indicate he aimed to target ICE agents rather than harm detainees. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Nancy Larson, stated that Jahn’s plans included maximizing property damage at the facility.
On Wednesday, one detainee was killed and two others critically injured as shots were fired at the ICE center. Larson identified Jahn, 29, as the shooter and mentioned that his notes revealed intentions to minimize collateral damage to detainees and innocent individuals. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
FBI Director Kash Patel noted that evidence gathered so far suggests a considerable amount of pre-attack planning. One of Jahn’s handwritten notes reportedly stated that he hoped to instill fear among ICE agents, implying they might be targeted by a sniper. Larson indicated that Jahn likely acted alone during the attack, which involved gunfire directed towards the building, its windows, and law enforcement vehicles in the vicinity.
The notes included a detailed plan for the assault, and Jahn expressed contempt for ICE employees, describing them as “people showing up to collect a dirty pay check.” While Larson declared the actions as representing “the very definition of terrorism,” no evidence has surfaced regarding Jahn’s ties to any specific group, aside from expressing his animosity towards the federal government. She acknowledged the efforts of ICE and other federal agents who worked under dangerous conditions to evacuate detainees from transport vehicles.
FBI Special Agent Joe Rothrock characterized the incident as a “targeted, ambush-style attack on law enforcement,” emphasizing that Jahn specifically aimed to kill ICE agents. He acknowledged that casualties among detainees were a likely outcome of the attack, as they were being transported at the time.
