Logitech has introduced its new Signature Slim Solar Plus K980 keyboard, marking its first solar-powered model in over a decade. Priced at $99.99, the K980 operates solely on light, utilizing a solar cell capable of converting both natural and artificial light (minimum 200 lux) into power. This battery can last up to 10 years with a full charge, allowing for use in darkness for up to four months.
A Logitech spokesperson confirmed that the K980’s battery is safely user-replaceable with components supplied by iFixIt. In terms of design, the keyboard follows a standard full-size layout, including Windows and macOS key labels, directional keys, and a numpad. Its function row comes pre-programmed for media control, screen brightness, and volume, with customization options available through the Logi Options Plus app for both Mac and Windows users. Notably, the K980 features a microphone mute key, a camera toggle, and an Action key that can be programmed as needed.
One of the K980’s standout features is the AI Launch key. This key defaults to launching Copilot on Windows PCs and Gemini on ChromeOS, but users can customize it to access tools such as ChatGPT or create specific macros using Logitech’s Smart Actions. The keyboard can connect to up to three Bluetooth devices and switch between them with a button press. While it can also connect via a Logitech Bolt USB transmitter, one is not included in the package.
The K980 includes a simple power LED that switches from green to red when a charge is needed, prompting users to check the Options Plus app for light conditions. This update follows a broader trend in 2025, where companies like Lenovo have also announced similar solar-powered keyboards, though Logitech’s K980 offers different customization features.
