Hideo Kojima revealed his collaboration with Xbox in 2022 for a new game titled OD. Following an initial teaser unveiling the name and cast, a new three-minute trailer offers a glimpse into the game’s concept, which is intended to be unique and immersive.
The trailer features Sophia Lillis’ character who opens a red door, lights candles resembling elements from Death Stranding, and showcases a horror-themed atmosphere as rain falls and unsettling knocking sounds are heard. Lillis’ character is depicted as frightened, suggesting the gameplay will heavily involve horror elements.
Additionally, the teaser highlights early development work using Unreal Engine, with support from Microsoft. At the 10th Anniversary livestream for Kojima Productions, Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed that the game’s development is progressing and that Microsoft is aiding with visual and technical aspects. He stated that OD demonstrates the studio’s unique identity and emphasized their support for the project.
OD is described as a hybrid of a game and a movie, promising to explore themes that challenge players’ fears. Unlike Death Stranding, which utilized the Sony-owned Decima engine, OD will be powered by Unreal Engine. Kojima praised Unreal Engine technology, claiming it surpasses what was used in Death Stranding 2.
Filmmaker Jordan Peele is also associated with OD, although Kojima clarified that Peele is contributing to a different segment of the overall experience. This might explain the game’s subtitle, OD Knock, to distinguish it from Peele’s involvement.
While there is confirmation of ongoing development, an official release date for OD has yet to be announced. Spencer remarked on Kojima’s innovation in various aspects of the game, highlighting the collaboration’s excitement for the future.
