Couples planning weddings in Jersey are increasingly focused on obtaining better value for their budgets, as rising costs influence their decisions and the total number of ceremonies declines. In 2024, there were 381 marriages compared to 374 the previous year, yet this figure represents a decrease from the 522 ceremonies recorded in 2014.
Molly Happer, a wedding planner and events consultant, noted that couples appear to be approaching their wedding plans with a strategic mindset. She highlighted that clients are not necessarily seeking lower prices but rather better overall value. “What is your main priority in a wedding? Is it good photos, good food, the best venue? That’s when we know where we can allocate the majority of the budget,” she advised clients.
Additionally, recent statistics from the Office of the Superintendent Registrar indicate a 22% increase in Register Office weddings, with 135 out of 316 civil ceremonies in 2024 held there. This trend suggests a shift away from traditional full church ceremonies, as indicated by event planner Mike Ward from The Workshop. He noted the increased demand for all-inclusive services offered by hotels, as more couples recognize the cost implications of marquee weddings, which can incur additional expenses for venues and equipment.
Moreover, couples are becoming more hands-on in wedding preparations to manage costs. Ward acknowledged instances where clients have assisted in setting up tables to lower expenses. Flowers also present an opportunity for savings if planned carefully.
As couples navigate their wedding planning in an evolving landscape, the emphasis on balancing quality and budget reflects broader economic pressures.
