A union has highlighted the pressing need for assistance from the Labour Party for workers linked to supply-chain firms affected by the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) shutdown following a cyber attack. JLR’s production has been halted for over two weeks, raising concerns that firms depending on JLR could face insolvency without intervention.
Unite’s regional officer for the West Midlands, Jason Richards, indicated that the potential for job losses could reach into the thousands if JLR does not provide updates regarding the situation. JLR has manufacturing facilities in Solihull and Merseyside. Industry Minister Chris McDonald stated that JLR is leading efforts to support its supply chain and that cyber experts are working to resolve the issues.
Discussions have also occurred between McDonald and West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker regarding the shutdown’s impact on the region, with plans to maintain communication until JLR resumes production. An extraordinary meeting of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders was held, attended by officials from the Department for Business and Trade, to address the suppliers’ challenges and concerns.
Richards expressed apprehension over the ongoing developments, noting that while some firms are laying off employees with some pay, others are not providing any compensation. He suggested a potential furlough scheme but recognized financial constraints. He indicated frustration with the lack of communication from the government and reiterated the need for the Labour Party to take action.
Umesh Samani, chairman of the Independent Motor Dealers Association, mentioned that most independent dealers are currently not facing severe consequences, but emphasized that uncertainty regarding JLR’s production restart poses a significant threat to smaller businesses in the supply chain. He called for government intervention to prevent further business closures.
