OpenAI is exploring the development of a new AI device in partnership with Jony Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer. According to a report by The Information, this device may resemble a smart speaker without a display. Sources indicate that OpenAI has already secured a contract with Luxshare and approached Goertek, two companies involved in Apple’s assembly supply chain, to provide essential components for upcoming AI products.
In addition to this initial device, OpenAI is reportedly considering a range of other gadgets, including glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable pin. The timeline for the release of the first products is projected for late 2026 or early 2027. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously mentioned a vision for a “family of devices” resulting from the collaboration with Ive, emphasizing that the first product would be pocket-sized, contextually aware, and screen-free.
While Altman had stated that the initial AI device would not be eyewear, the latest rumors suggest that smart glasses may follow the launch of the first product. The mention of a wearable pin raises questions, especially since Ive had previously expressed reservations about body-worn technology. Moreover, earlier discussions about an in-ear device seem to be absent from the current product lineup.
The report notes that OpenAI has started leveraging Apple’s supply chain in China, highlighting the significance of Luxshare and Goertek, known for assembling various Apple products. Concerns about potential executive departures to OpenAI reportedly led Apple to cancel a recent meeting with manufacturing teams in China, as indicated by an anonymous source.
There has been a noticeable exodus of Apple employees to OpenAI since the partnership with Ive’s startup was announced. Tang Tan, OpenAI’s current chief hardware officer and former head of Apple’s product design, is said to have reassured recruits from Apple that they will experience reduced bureaucracy and increased collaboration at OpenAI.
