Nothing’s charging case Super Mic is a small upgrade to earbud audio

Nothing Technology has introduced the Ear 3 earbuds that feature an innovative microphone solution called “Super Mic.” Unlike traditional designs, these earbuds utilize two microphones located in the charging case rather than the earbuds themselves. Users can activate these microphones via a button on the case.

The design aims to enhance audio quality by using beamforming technology, which potentially minimizes background noise since the case can be positioned closer to the user’s mouth. This feature may provide clearer recordings in quieter environments but has shown mixed results in noisier settings; while it effectively reduces unwanted sounds, it can also obscure the user’s voice due to aggressive noise cancellation.

Initial testing during a recent trip revealed that in quieter conditions, the audio quality improved compared to using the earbuds alone. However, during a voice call, the difference was minimal according to feedback from the other party. Additionally, when tested in loud environments, such as near construction noise, the Super Mic blocked out significant background sound but resulted in choppy audio.

Latency issues were also observed, particularly when recording video. The audio from the Super Mic often fell out of sync with video, which could limit its usability for certain applications, despite improved sound quality.

Using the Super Mic requires holding the case, which diminishes its hands-free functionality. Compatibility is noted as another challenge; some apps do not support external microphones, restricting the functionality to calls and specific recording apps only. The company’s representative clarified that limitations arise from app-level decisions rather than the hardware itself.

Further testing of the Ear 3’s capabilities is planned, but there are significant considerations regarding practical use and compatibility that users might want to keep in mind.
