The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing students from Excel College, Ejigbo, Lagos, engaging in smoking, drinking, and dancing in a school hostel. This incident reportedly occurred in April 2025 but gained attention online this week, causing concern among parents and the public about supervision standards in schools.
In response, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to assume control of the investigation from the Ejigbo Police Division, which had previously questioned the school’s principal. According to police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi, the principal confirmed that the students shown in the video had already graduated.
Adebisi mentioned that the police are treating the matter seriously due to its implications for discipline and morality in educational institutions. He emphasized the need for both public and private schools, as well as parents and guardians, to actively supervise students. The police cautioned school owners against ignoring disciplinary issues that could escalate into criminal behavior.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have pledged to make the findings public. Adebisi also encouraged community members to report any suspicious activities occurring in schools.
- Why it matters: The investigation highlights concerns over student supervision in schools and the importance of safeguarding youth behavior to prevent future disciplinary issues.
- The latest: The police have confirmed that the students involved have graduated, and the investigation is being conducted by the SCID.
