Tesla is currently in the process of redesigning its electronic door handles, which are the subject of an ongoing investigation due to reports of occupants being trapped inside vehicles. In an interview with Bloomberg, Tesla’s design chief, Franz von Holzhausen, indicated that the aim of the redesign is to create a more intuitive mechanism for users in stressful situations.
The forthcoming update will unify the electronic and manual door-release systems into a single button, moving away from the current setup where these mechanisms are located separately. This change appears to be a response to a safety investigation initiated this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The probe was triggered by complaints from Tesla owners who reported difficulties opening their doors from the outside, particularly in emergencies involving children. The current handles are designed to be flush with the vehicle, which may limit accessibility when malfunctioning.
Additionally, Tesla is paying close attention to potential regulatory shifts in China, where officials are contemplating a ban on fully concealed door handles. Von Holzhausen remarked that Tesla has plans to address any regulatory changes effectively. This move reflects Tesla’s broader strategy to enhance vehicle safety and user experience while also maintaining compliance with evolving safety standards.
