Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old, is currently being held without bail at Utah County Jail after being arrested in connection with the shooting of Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist, at an event at Utah Valley University. Robinson allegedly took responsibility for the shooting in messages on the messaging platform Discord hours before his arrest, stating, “It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this.” He has not yet been formally charged and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
Robinson is facing serious allegations, including aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm, which could result in the death penalty. The messages exchanged on Discord reportedly occurred during a manhunt for Kirk’s shooter that took place over the course of more than a day. A spokesperson for Discord has stated that an internal investigation found no evidence that Robinson had planned the incident or promoted violence on the platform.
Authorities are looking into the group chat involving Robinson, which included over 20 participants. FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned that investigators would be interviewing everyone involved in that chat to pursue all leads. Robinson’s involvement in the shooting has raised questions about his motivations, particularly in light of his past voter registration status as unaffiliated. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement trying to establish any potential influence from social media or coordinations leading up to the incident.
Kirk, who was hit by a single bullet while speaking at an open-air event, has drawn varied responses regarding his political views. He was a co-founder of Turning Point USA, which promotes conservative ideals on college campuses. There have been allegations of organized motives behind the shooting, although no definitive evidence has been presented to confirm such claims.
