InnoCreate Develops Rapid Test for White Spot Syndrome Virus in Shrimp
InnoCreate Bioscience Co., Ltd has launched the world’s first rapid test for detecting the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in shrimp. This tool aims to provide shrimp farmers a quick and affordable method for on-site detection, similar to COVID-19 testing kits. The WSSV Rapid Test Kit enables farmers to diagnose infections using a gill sample from shrimp, with results available in just 15 to 30 minutes.
WSSV is a highly virulent disease causing substantial mortality in farmed shrimp, leading to considerable economic losses in the aquaculture industry. Traditional diagnostic methods are often costly and time-consuming, requiring specialized equipment and trained personnel. InnoCreate’s test allows farmers to manage disease risks more effectively, providing results that can inform timely interventions to prevent mass fatalities in their stock.
The kit has received recognition from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as suitable for field use and is designed for low-resource settings. It requires no electricity or advanced training to operate, making diagnostic capabilities accessible to farmers in rural areas.
- Why it matters: The availability of rapid testing can significantly improve shrimp farmers’ ability to respond to disease outbreaks, potentially reducing economic losses and supporting sustainable aquaculture practices.
- The latest: InnoCreate has been named a finalist for the 2025 Responsible Seafood Innovation Award in the aquaculture category, highlighting its impact on the industry.
