US President Donald Trump has announced plans to sue the New York Times for $15 billion over allegations of defamation and libel. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, he criticized the newspaper for what he describes as a prolonged campaign of falsehoods against him. Trump specifically referenced the Times’ endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, claiming the publication has become a “mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.” He indicated that the lawsuit would be initiated in Florida.
Trump has consistently voiced dissatisfaction with media outlets he perceives as biased against him. In his recent post, he remarked on the prominence of the Times’ endorsement of Harris, suggesting that it is an unprecedented move for the publication. He also accused various media platforms of using advanced techniques to misrepresent him.
This is not Trump’s first attempt to sue the New York Times. In 2023, a judge dismissed a previous lawsuit he filed, stating that the claims were unsuccessful under constitutional law. That lawsuit, seeking $100 million, implicated both the newspaper and Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, in what he characterized as a conspiracy to acquire his tax records, connected to a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into his financial dealings.
Additionally, Trump has faced challenges with other defamation suits. For instance, a federal judge dismissed his $475 million lawsuit against CNN in 2023, which alleged that the network compared him to Adolf Hitler. These legal actions reflect Trump’s ongoing contention with media narratives surrounding his presidency and personal conduct.
