DNA evidence retrieved from a towel that was wrapped around the firearm used in the shooting of Charlie Kirk has been matched to the suspect in custody, according to the FBI director. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested in connection with Kirk’s death, which occurred during an event at Utah Valley University. Investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle near the scene and a screwdriver was located on the roof from where the shot was fired.
Evidence from the towel and the screwdriver has been confirmed to link to Robinson, as stated by FBI officials. A formal charge against Robinson is anticipated within the week, but the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Additionally, a note found at Robinson’s home reportedly indicated an intention to harm Kirk, with references suggesting the note was written prior to the incident.
Robinson faces multiple charges, including aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm, as recorded in a Utah County Sheriff inmate booking sheet. The case has drawn attention, particularly after Utah Governor Spencer Cox reported that Robinson had initially been uncooperative with investigators, although he was persuaded by his father to surrender. Robinson’s roommate, who is believed to be transgender, has also reportedly assisted in the investigation.
In a related context, Charlie Kirk, a controversial figure and founder of the right-wing youth organization Turning Point USA, was known for his appearances on various platforms promoting conservative viewpoints. At the time of the shooting, he was actively participating in the American Comeback Tour, which involved engagements at multiple college campuses across the U.S. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to host an episode of Kirk’s podcast as a tribute to him.
