The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has reported a notable increase in influenza cases, particularly driven by the H3N2 and RSV strains, as well as the Victoria strain. According to ICMR data, cases of H3N2 rose significantly in 2025, beginning in July (week 28) with an estimated 10–15 infections. By the end of July (week 31), this number increased to 20–30, with cases continuing to rise through August (week 34), ultimately reaching 40–50 cases. The peak occurred in September (week 37), with 71 recorded cases.
The positivity rate for H3N2 also showed an upward trend, increasing from approximately 0.7% in late July to a peak of 2.8%–3.6% in August. Simultaneously, the ICMR indicated a surge in RSV cases from week 28 to week 37, typical during the monsoon season. This rise in infections resulted in increased hospitalization, especially among children, with severe symptoms such as high fever and coughing reported. Vulnerable groups, including young children and the elderly, experienced complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
Experts have urged caution regarding self-medication, emphasizing the importance of consulting healthcare professionals for accurate diagnosis and treatment. It was highlighted that while these viruses are commonly encountered, they can pose risks, particularly for those with underlying health issues.
