Hull City Council plans to assist over 1,000 students with school uniform expenses starting next month. Year 7 pupils who qualify for free school meals will receive a £50 uniform voucher, which is an increase of £10 compared to previous years. This funding originates from the government’s Household Support Fund and is set to be distributed to families prior to the October half-term.
Council leader Mike Ross acknowledged the ongoing cost of living crisis and expressed hope that the enhanced grants would provide some financial relief. However, he noted that the £50 voucher may not fully cover the total costs of school uniforms. To address this issue, Ross has urged the government to extend additional support to local authorities, including Hull, to further assist low-income families.
The council’s decision to increase the funding for school uniforms was made after a request from the full council to reassess the level of financial aid available. This initiative reflects the council’s attempt to respond to the needs of families facing financial challenges in light of rising costs.
