Elektron has developed a following for its distinctive electronic musical instruments, and its latest product, the Tonverk, is an advanced sampler. The Tonverk can create multisampled instruments autonomously, transforming a single sample track into a complex arrangement of multiple samples. It features extensive routing and audio processing capabilities, catering to users interested in experimental music.
At its core, the Tonverk is an eight-track polyphonic sampler, offering three machine types: Single Player, Multi Player, and Subtracks. The Single Player mode plays back a single sample chromatically, while the Multi Player mode utilizes multiple samples for more realistic sounds. Notably, the Tonverk has the ability to automatically create multisampled instruments by sending MIDI notes to external devices and recording the resulting audio. However, the current firmware limits sample editing, which could be problematic if latency issues arise or recordings are incomplete.
The Subtracks feature allows users to load kits of eight samples into a single track, simplifying the workflow compared to traditional samplers. However, applying effects affects all samples within a Subtrack simultaneously, making it less flexible.
Some functionalities, such as a sample chopping mode present in other Elektron models like the Digitakt, are not included. This may limit its appeal to specific genres, like hip-hop. The company hints at the possibility of additional machines in the future, as their demo indicates that more features might be forthcoming.
The Tonverk comes equipped with 17 built-in effects, three effects sends, and extensive LFO and modulation options. It also includes a sophisticated sequencer with 256 steps, allowing for advanced sound design and variability.
This launch signifies not just a new instrument, but the introduction of a new hardware platform from Elektron. Priced at $1,599, the Tonverk is aimed at a premium market segment and is currently sold out through the manufacturer, although pre-orders are available through various retailers.
